Wild Lettuce: Nature's Answer to Aches and Pains

Unlocking the Magic of Wild Lettuce

Pain Relief

Wild lettuce is primarily known for providing pain relief.  The plant excretes a milky white substance known as lactucarium, which is chemically similar to pharmaceutical compounds found in prescription painkillers. Lactucarium has been found to possess analgesic activity, along with sedative activity. One study found that a 30mg dose of lactucarium is similar to a 60mg dose of ibuprofen. The compounds found in the lactucarium work in the way morphine does, directly impacting the central nervous system, blunting its ability to feel pain.

Many herbalists will prescribe wild lettuce for severe migraines and to women who suffer acute pain during their menstrual cycle.

Sedative

The pain relieving qualities of Wild Lettuce also help with relaxation. This makes it very useful in the treatment of insomnia and anxiety. It is sometimes called the opium weed as it is said to produce a euphoric, dreamy effect making it easier to fall asleep.

This sedative effect is sometimes recommended by herbalists to treat hyperactive children.

Respiratory Health

Wild lettuce can also be used as a natural treatment for asthma and coughs. This powerful herb can help to reduce irritation of the bronchial tubes and lungs. It’s also facilitates loosening mucus and the difficulty breathing associated with asthma. Furthermore, it can also be an effective treatment for whooping cough and bronchitis.
